The Room-by-Room Declutter Checklist
Your free Nest Crafted guide to a calmer home in one weekend
How to use this checklist: Work one room at a time. Grab three bags — Donate, Trash, Relocate — set a 25-minute timer, and check boxes as you go. Don’t buy a single organizer until every room is decluttered. (This printable pairs with our New Year Organization Reset guide.)
The 15-Minute Daily Plan (your maintenance rhythm)
Morning (5 min): ☐ Make the bed · ☐ Start one load of laundry · ☐ Wipe the bathroom sink
Evening (10 min): ☐ Reset walk with a basket — everything back to its home · ☐ Dishes in dishwasher · ☐ Trash out
Kitchen & Pantry
- ☐ Toss expired food, spices older than 1 year, stale snacks
- ☐ Donate duplicate gadgets (keep the best one of each)
- ☐ Group by use: daily cooking at eye level, rarely-used up high
- ☐ Clear counters to daily-use items only
- ☐ Tame the junk drawer: tray + only what fits
- ☐ Wipe one shelf before restocking
Bedroom & Closet
- ☐ Flip all hangers backward — anything still backward in 6 months goes
- ☐ Try on the “maybes”: doesn’t fit or flatter now = donate
- ☐ Nightstand to 4 items: lamp, book, water, charger
- ☐ Pull everything from under the bed — forgot it was there? Donate it
- ☐ Start “one in, one out” today
Bathroom
- ☐ Toss expired medications, old makeup, half-used lotions
- ☐ Counter keeps daily items only — rest in an under-sink caddy
- ☐ Fresh hand towel out, spare toilet paper visible
- ☐ Wipe mirror + sink while it’s empty
Entryway
- ☐ One hook + one bin per person — everything else leaves
- ☐ Coats unworn all season → donate pile
- ☐ Shoes: weekly-worn pairs only by the door
- ☐ Clear a landing tray for keys, mail, sunglasses
Living Room
- ☐ Surfaces to 70% clear — remotes in a tray, mail in a drawer
- ☐ Magazines/catalogs older than a month → recycle
- ☐ Cables into one labeled box
- ☐ Throw blankets folded over sofa arms (cozy and tidy)
Laundry & Utility
- ☐ Single socks, stained rags → trash
- ☐ Decant detergents if bottles are half-crushed clutter
- ☐ One basket per person — no mystery piles
Kids’ Rooms & Toys
- ☐ Broken toys → trash (not donation)
- ☐ The toy rotation: box half, store 2 weeks, swap
- ☐ Outgrown clothes sorted by size for hand-down or donate
- ☐ Artwork: keep favorites in one folder, photograph the rest
Home Office / Paper
- ☐ One paper sweep: action / file / recycle — shred the rest
- ☐ Set up a single inbox tray going forward
- ☐ Unsubscribe from 10 marketing emails
- ☐ Cables labeled, chargers you can’t identify → recycle
Garage / Storage
- ☐ If you forgot you owned it, you don’t need it
- ☐ “Maybe” box: seal, date, stash — unopened in 6 months = donate
- ☐ Broken items are trash, not donations
The Donation Decision Guide
| Ask yourself… | Answer |
|---|---|
| Have I used it in the last year? | No → donate |
| Is it broken, stained, or missing pieces? | Yes → trash (not donation) |
| Would I buy it again today? | No → donate |
| Am I keeping it from guilt? | Yes → donate, guilt-free |
| Does someone I love need it more? | Yes → give it this week |
After the Declutter: Buy Only This
- ☐ Matching hangers (one type) — closets only
- ☐ Clear bins for pantry — never opaque
- ☐ Drawer dividers — test one before committing
- ☐ Labels or a label maker
- ☐ Skip: anything “aspirational,” specialty organizers for stuff you should’ve donated
The final step: schedule the donation drop now. The reset isn’t done until the bags leave the house.
